Learn the secret to feeling good about the skin you’re in
Fitness is more than just exercise for your muscles. It’s a wholistic approach to life and a commitment to be your best self. To feel good about the skin you’re in – start with caring for it.
We speak to Shaun Douglass-Galley, our resident skin health guru, about the service he provides at Dermazen and what else rounds out his fitness.
What’s the story behind Dermazen?
Having worked in London in the aesthetics industry, we saw first hand how seriously people take ageing ! The idea that skin is passing through so many anatomical, physiological and clinical changes – we know that your average store bought ‘cream’ or treatment just wont do !
So launching DermaZen has allowed us to bring our knowledge of skin health into South Australia and educate our clients that to age SMART they have to be consistent, committed and accessing the very best medical solutions for their skin.
As you know I am a massive fan and every time I see you I feel like I’ve been to a gym for my skin. Is that how you see it as well?
Exactly as I see it – You wouldn’t go to the gym to not burn body fat, or reach the right muscle group, or leave feeling better about yourself – so it’s no different when working on the skin.
Unless your treatment is stimulating or ‘tingles’ the likelihood is that is is only reaching ‘dead skin’, and that in my view is just a waste of time and $
My clients ‘train with me’ in order to achieve skin that is smooth, even in colour tone, firm and tight, well hydrated, contour rich and free from underlying disease.
What makes Dermazen different to any other ‘skin spa’ out there?
Our focus is on the ageing cycles skin will take – we categorise these in 3 phases, and passionately work with our clients to limit the onset of Phases 2 and 3.
DermaZen is focused on Medical and Dermal Therapies, we do not offer beauty treatments – but rather ways to reach layers of the skin that will leave a noticeable longer term difference.
Can you tell us a little more about the 3 phases you mentioned?
Phase 1 : Optimally Active Phase
Happens from birth to age 10 years
This is when skin is at its healthiest. No sebum production, inflammation, dryness or sensitivities.
Phase 2 : Deteriorated Phase
From age 10-30yrs.
It may surprise some that from the age of 10, our skin is not functioning at its best !
Irregular cellular functions begin, with impaired skin barrier function and epidermal renewal. Sebum is produced at varying levels, chronic inflammation and textural irregularities being and we see enlarged pores, dyschromia (pigmentation alterations) dull and at times diseased skin.
Phase 3 : Inactive Skin Phase
Begins at 30yrs of age
Skin is now progressively ageing.
With irregular Keratinocyte Maturation Cycles, (replacement of fresh active skin cells) weakened and impaired barrier function and advanced changes in texture and skin laxity.
Wrinkles appear as existing collagen/elastin is damaged and there is an overall decrease in the production of new collagen and elastin in the skin.
As we know everyone’s skin is different, so how important is it to get the right products for your skin?
It’s Key !
There is so much out there, and without specialised knowledge of ingredients it can be a scratch of the head moment when trying to choose the right products for your skin Phase and Type.
When advising our clients, we follow this as a general rule
Choose the right cleanser to: Normalise skin with effective cleansing and remove all surface debris
Choose the right polish to: Facilitate epidermal renewal, Improve circulation, Enhance product penetration and Remove dead skin cells
Oil Control / Tone
Choose the right pads or toner to: Control Sebum, Balance the PH level of your skin and Enhance Product penetration
Hydrating and Calming
Choose the right Hydrator to: Restore Hydration, Limit skin irritation and inflammation and Soothe Dry Skin
Choose the product to: Maximise Skin Barrier Function, Reduce Signs of Ageing, Halt fine lines and wrinkles, Reduce sun/age spots
Choose the right product to: Provide broad spectrum protection from UVA/UVB HEV and IR-A rays
You may have noticed I didn’t mention ‘Moisturisers’
Traditional moisturisers do more harm than good by resting on top of the skin’s outermost layers and artificially hydrating from the outside. As a result skin cells are no longer triggered to produce their own means of hydration. This slowing of the natural hydration process leads to a weakened skin barrier function and a dependency on moisturisers.

What are your 3 tips to get our skin ready for summer?
Treat yourself to a Hydrating Medical Treatment : using the latest techniques and highly concentrated quality active ingredients, our treatment facials hydrate, boost and firm the skin – giving you a summer glow like no other !
Invasapeel – This Zo Skin Health Peel has a unique formulation that uses a novel combination of plant enzymes and 10% Glycolic Acid to exfoliate the surface of the epidermis. With no actual peeling or downtime – it will leave your skin plumped and as smooth as a baby’s bum !
Keeping that summer glow will rest heavily on your approach to SPF !
Apply sunscreen about 20-30 minutes before you expose your skin to the sun. This will ensure that the ingredients in the SPF can really begin to work the moment you step outside.
SPF should be reapplied every 2 hours. If however you go swimming, play a sport or simply sweat from the summer heat, sunscreen should be immediately reapplied.
Try Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF30 for the sun protection that also doubles up as a makeup primer!
